By Lily White

Building a website is not an easy task and it takes a lot of work. Often people think that the moment they publish, that flocks of people are going to arrive at their site. Unfortunately it doesn't happen that way ,and that's what makes search engine optimization so very important. After all, the higher up you get in page rankings, the more likely your site will get noticed. SEO is the way the search engines learn about your website and determine what is important about them.

On page optimization is pretty easy and must be a target not only for the main web page but also for every single content page within the website.

Here are some ideas to help you get your web into good shape for SEO.

Add Keyword in Title: Include ONLY our main keywords. The least amount of words you can place in the title, the more weight Google will give to each of the keywords and the higher you will rank.

Add Keywords in H1 header tags: The H1 header tag should be as far towards the top of the page as possible. You can think of an H1 header tag as a title for whatever content you have on your page.

Add Keywords in H2 header tags: This can be thought of as a sub heading for our webpage. You should place your 2nd most important keyword in the H2 header tag. The H2 tag should be placed somewhere towards the top half of your webpage

How often your keywords show on a page is important. That doesn't mean that you can plaster them all over the page at random. Google will not approve of this. Key word density is dependant on how often the keyword shows in conjunction with the total number of words. The keywords must read as if they naturally belongs in the text.

Yahoo search engines understand that words placed in bold and italics are more important than the other text. That doesn't mean that you should go overboard with this either. Try to keep your entire page as natural looking as possible.

Properly include ALT image tags: ALT image tags is the description of the image for search engine. You should always include the keyword in the alt tags to increase keyword dentisity, but not overdo it.

Anchor Text: It is the clickable or the visible text within the hyperlink.

Keywords in URL: Search engines take into account the words used in the URL. So it's a good practice to include your targeted keywords in the URLs of your website.

Link structure: If the navigation menu of a website is structured then the visitors will navigate the website with just few clicks. It is necessary for the consumer. This also helps the search spiders to get several links to follow.

Off page SEO is believed to be more important than on page. This may be something you will want to investigate further and arrive at your own conclusions. Always keep yourself aware as to what the search engines are looking for. After all they are your best advertisement for reaching the masses of people that are on the net everyday. Naturally the more traffic you can generate to your site the more successful your business will be.
