By Lawrence Christopher

Nikon cameras have achieved almost legendary status. Over the decades, they have established themselves as precision, versatile and easy-to-use cameras in sturdy, robust casings with models to suit both hobby enthusiasts and professionals. The Nikon digital range continues that tradition and the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) models are among the best of the best. The fast Nikon D3S makes it easy to shoot sporting events with the skill and confidence of a professional.

The Nikon D3 series was launched in August 2007. The D3S, specifically designed for the sports enthusiast, is part of the D3 series and a close digital cousin to the top-of-the-range model, the D3X.The D3S is typically priced at a significant discount of about 35% to the D3X making it that much affordable.

The Nikon D3 was its first digital camera with an image sensor sized at 24 mm x 36mm, the same size as 35mm film. Nikon dubbed this sized sensor its FX, meaning full-frame, format. The D3S comes with a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semi-conductor) 12.1 megapixel image sensor. It produces rich resolution images with an dynamically optimized pixel count and size. Generally, an image sensor is an integral part of the digitization process, converting optical still images into electric signals.

The camera has an amazingly wide ISO sensitivity range from 200 to 12,800, confirming the unit is superbly sensitive to light. This high sensitivity allows the photographer to produce very fine grain, low noise images. A low speed rating indicates the imaging system requires more exposure to light to produce the same image density as a higher speed rating. Arguably, the lower the ISO sensitivity rating, the better the potential image quality.

Another cool feature of the D3S is its one button live view with two shooting modes. These two modes are suitable for either studio or remote shooting. Its tripod mode provides up to 27x magnification with precise focus confirmation when set-up in the tripod mode, allowing great shots of even the tiniest of tiny subjects.

The camera allows flexible picture control providing standard, vivid, monochrome and neutral as four preset options. Additionally, it also provides allows up to nine customizable control settings to allow intimately personalized images.

The Nikon D3S comes fitted with dual CF-card slots. It has intuitive backup, overflow as well as copy options. Battery capacity is capacious, as many as 4,400 shots on a single battery charge.

The D3S is powerful and a pleasure to handle. The fast Nikon D3S makes it easy to shoot sporting events really does take the pain out of freezing time.
